Client spotlight: Family man Ronald
At allcare, we like to highlight the lives of our clients. We dedicate time to getting to know their stories and highlighting their achievements. Today we interview Ronald, a man whose story is one of perseverance, love, and accomplishment.
Where were you born?
I was born in Sydney on 1 November 1942. My family consisted of 13 children – we definitely weren’t worried walking down the street!
What was a formative moment from your childhood?
The day I went to hospital at the age of three and was diagnosed with polio disease. I didn’t leave until I was 14. During this time I was given a calliper (steel leg brace) that attached to my shoe to help me walk as my left leg was withered away due to the disease. I can’t remember anything about my youth – it was a traumatic time for me.
Who was the most influential person in your life?
John Rushton, my manager during my time working at WIN Television. He was the Chief Executive Officer and a top bloke. Everything you put in, he appreciated. I worked at WIN for 20 years and my title was Purchasing Manager. On top of this, I looked after the office, sent away video tapes, and made sure everything was in place and ready for production.
Tell us about a happy time in your life.
The day I met my wife, Luise, who I call Lucy. It was by chance that we met. I saw her swimming at Shellharbour Beach and said to myself, ‘I am going to marry that girl’, and a few years later I did! We have two beautiful children, Craig and Vanessa, who I am very proud of.
Who is the love of your life and how did you meet?
My wife Lucy! I’ve known her since she was 15 and we’ve been married for 60 years. I love how caring and understanding she is. She has always supported me and is my biggest advocate. She wants nothing but the best for me.
What is a hobby you enjoy?
I like watching television. Lucy and I watch a movie together every day at lunch time. I also enjoy being on the computer, messaging my kids and listening to country and western music.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Being the President of the Stoney Range Pony Club in Albion Park. It all started with Vanessa. She was obsessed with horses and begged us to get her one for years. We bought her a horse when she was 10 and looking back, we’re so glad we did. It made her really responsible as she had to feed, water and groom them everyday. Horses became our lifestyle for 30 years and allowed me to connect with my daughter. I’m really proud of the work I contributed to the club as President and how we worked together as a community to lift the club up to be the best in NSW (in my humble opinion).
