How to Switch Home Care Package Providers in Wollongong and the Shoalhaven: A Simple, Stress-Free Guide
Thinking about switching home care package providers? It might seem overwhelming at first — but the good news is, it doesn’t have to be.
Whether you're moving to a new area, seeking better support, unhappy with your current provider or simply want more value from your package, changing providers is a straightforward process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you make the switch with confidence, and get the aged care services that meet your needs.
Why do people switch Home Care providers?
There are many reasons why someone might choose to change home care providers. Some of the most common include:
Better services: Your needs may have changed, and you require services your current provider doesn’t offer
More reliable support: Inconsistent scheduling, poor communication, or lack of follow-through can impact your wellbeing.
Lower fees: Some providers charge high administration or case management fees, leaving less funding for actual care. Choosing a more cost-effective provider can improve your service hours.
Choice and control: You may want more say in who provides your care, or prefer a consistent, familiar support team.
If any of these sound familiar, it might be time to explore other options.
How to switch Home Care Package providers in 5 easy steps
1. Review your current agreement
Start by checking the terms and conditions with your current provider. Look for any required notice periods or exit fees. Don’t worry — any unspent funds in your package will be transferred to your new provider after 70 days of your last day of service.
2. Research and compare providers
Take some time to explore your options. Look for a provider that offers the services you need, a transparent fee structure, and a flexible approach to care.

3. Reactivate your referral code
To begin the switch, you’ll need to reactivate your referral code through My Aged Care. This was created when you signed up with your current provider. Call 1800 200 422 and request reactivation of your Home Care Package code. Once active, provide this code to your new provider so they can initiate the transition.
4. Notify your current provider and set an end date
You need to give formal notice to your current provider of your decision to switch. This formal notice can be in writing or verbally over the phone. You also need to agree on a service end date to your current provider. Your new provider (such as allcare) or My Aged Care can assist with this process.
You have 56 days from your last day of service with your current provider to sign a new agreement with your chosen provider. If you need more time, you can request an additional 28-day extension from My Aged Care.
5. Begin services with your new provider
Once the transition date arrives, your new provider will begin delivering home care services. If you’ve chosen a flexible provider like allcare, you may even be able to continue receiving services from your existing carers, maintaining continuity and peace of mind.
Under the current provisions set by My Aged Care, any unspent funds will be transferred to your new provider.
