How allcare has assisted Richard to live independently and safely in his own home

At allcare, we know you want to stay in your own home, and not be a burden on your family and friends. It is important you feel safe and secure in your home. We know how important it is to provide flexible support that enables you to live the life you enjoy, in familiar surroundings.

It was important for allcare client Richard to stay in his own home with his wife of 56 years, Margaret, and their dog, Harley. We devised a care plan that not only met Richard’s individual needs, but also offered respite for Margaret who had become his sole carer. 

We spoke with Richard about how allcare has supported him in ageing in his own home. Read on to find out what kind of support Richard receives, and how it’s supported him to live independently and safely in his own home. 

How long have you been with allcare and how long have you known your Community Support Worker, Vikki? 

I have been with allcare for about 4 years and have known Vikki for around a year and a half. We’ve become good friends and it’s nice to have someone as reliable as she is. The three Community Support Workers I have are all reliable and do an excellent job. 

How has allcare’s services helped your wife Margaret? Has it offered her some relief?

Margaret does just about everything for me now, especially since I’ve been in a wheelchair. allcare’s services allow Margaret to have a break. My Support Workers help me get out of bed, take showers, get dressed, and assist with personal care. On a sunny day, we will also take our dog, Harley, out for a walk together. This support allows Margaret to handle other tasks and gives her a break. Wednesdays are her days out, where she leaves around 9:30 am and gets home around about 12 pm.

How important is it for you to stay in your home, and how has allcare helped with that?

It's incredibly important for me to stay in my home. I've lived here for 24 years, it’s my home, and I’m not selling it. If it weren’t for allcare, I’d be homeless by now. allcare comes in and provides the support I need, allowing me to continue living at home, which brings me great relief. I’m happy with the services I receive from allcare and while I’m unsure about the future, I’m happy and comfortable with the help I receive right now.
